The Fastest Baby Quilts to Make in a Weekend (Ranked)

Jenny Day

I'm a quilter who will never get enough bright colors, curious textures, and WHIMSY. My quilts mix modern design with retro soul, inspired by pop art. I use techniques and fabrics steeped in history to create new objects that are made to last.

Baby quilts are the gateway drug of the quilting world. They're small, they're manageable, they make incredible gifts, and they give you the satisfaction of a finished baby quilt without the three-year commitment of a king-sized bedspread. What's not to love?

But some baby quilts are significantly faster to make than others. And if you've got a baby shower on the calendar and a weekend to work with, that distinction matters enormously.

I recently ranked my favorite fast baby quilt patterns in this YouTube video, factoring in two things: how quickly you can actually get it done, and how visually impressive the result is. Because speed means nothing if you're handing someone a sad little quilt that looks like it took twenty minutes. We have standards here.

I timed myself making the top pick throughout the video - and then made three of them, because once you start, you really don't want to stop. You'll see why.

Here's the full ranking of the fastest baby quilts, in reverse order, so you have to read all the way to the bottom to find out who wins. (You're welcome.)

Honorable Mention: The Alice Block from Lepidoptera by Elizabeth Hartman Baby Quilt

Butterfly baby quilt from Elizabeth Hartman
Teal and white butterfly baby quilt from Elizabeth Hartman

Before we get to the official list, I have to give a shoutout to the Alice block from Elizabeth Hartman's Lepidoptera pattern, which works beautifully as a standalone baby quilt. It didn't quite make the cut because of the number of tiny pieces involved - precision cutting for a baby quilt on a deadline is a particular kind of self-inflicted stress. But it earns its honorable mention because it is stunning, and honestly? Not as complicated as it looks. If you have a little more time or a little more patience than I'm assuming, it's absolutely worth it.

#6: Cozy Cabin by Modernly Morgan

Cozy Cabin quilt pattern by Modernly Morgan, a scrappy modern log cabin baby quilt in bright multicolor prints on a cream background, close-up overhead view.

The Cozy Cabin baby quilt is a modern, scrappy take on the classic Log Cabin block, and it is an absolute delight. I've made multiple versions of this one (you can see them in the photos), and I actually pattern tested it for Modernly Morgan - you can read all about that adventure right here.

Full disclosure:

I've never made it in a baby quilt size specifically, so I can't speak from personal experience on the exact timing. But given how the construction works, I have no doubt it would be a satisfying and achievable weekend project. It comes in at #6 because the block variety adds a little extra decision-making along the way - which is actually one of its charms, just not a speed advantage for making super fast baby quilts.

#5: Shadow Stars by Jemima Flendt at Tied with a Ribbon

Shadow Stars quilt pattern by Jemima Flendt of Tied with a Ribbon, a scrappy sawtooth star baby quilt in cool multicolor Starry fabrics on a white background, displayed against a vibrant blue Van Gogh-style backing.
Shadow Stars quilt pattern by Jemima Flendt of Tied with a Ribbon, a bold sawtooth star baby quilt in warm colorway featuring red, pink, yellow, and mustard Starry fabrics on a white background, displayed on a wooden quilt ladder.

Shadow Stars is a Sawtooth Star pattern with such a clever, dynamic layout that the finished quilt looks significantly more complex than it is to make. I tested this pattern for Jemima and I've made multiple versions - the warm "Starry" colorway and the cool "Starry" colorway both get so much use in my shop, and for good reason. They're endlessly giftable baby quilts.

The flying geese units require a little precision, which is why it lands at #5 rather than higher on the list, but the payoff is enormous. This one has serious visual impact for the time investment. Plus, what baby wouldn't enjoy this baby quilt??

#4: The Hi Quilt by Emma Jean Jansen

Hi quilt pattern by Emma Jean Jansen from By the Bundle, a scrappy letter H block quilt in red, navy, pink, and gray prints on a cream background, laid flat on a white bed.

The Hi quilt comes from Emma Jean Jansen's book By the Bundle, and it is exactly as charming as it sounds. Big, bold, simple piecing that works beautifully in a baby quilt size, and the kind of design that makes people say "wait, YOU made that?" It's a great one to have in your arsenal when you want maximum adorableness with minimal fussing for your baby quilt gift.

Grab the book!

You can find Emma Jean's book on her website or through Bookshop.org or ThriftBooks if you want to add it to your library.

#3: Ebb and Flow by Penelope Handmade

Ebb and Flow quilt pattern by Penelope Handmade, two colorful curved baby quilts in rainbow scrappy prints draped over a gray sectional sofa in a modern living room.

Ebb and Flow is one of those patterns that I keep coming back to, and I've made so many versions at this point that I've lost count (not really, but almost). The curved piecing in this baby quilt sounds intimidating but it's actually not curved at all - it only looks like it from afar, and the result is this gorgeous, flowing design that looks like it took infinitely longer than it did.

This is one we carry in the shop as both a pattern and as kits, so if you want a curated, ready-to-go version, that's an option.

#2: Ombre I Spy

Ombre I Spy baby quilt in scrappy green novelty prints arranged in a gradient from light cream and yellow-green at the top to deep navy and teal at the bottom, displayed outdoors on a garden gate.

This one is a little more freeform than the others on this list - the "pattern" is mostly in the concept. You're making a scrappy, ombre-arranged I Spy baby quilt, which means your fabric selection and color placement IS the design work. The key tool here is a Ruby Ruler or color tool to help you arrange your fabrics by value into a smooth gradient.

The result is this magical, glowing baby quilt that looks like it was designed by someone with a very sophisticated color sensibility. That someone is you. With a helpful little tool.

#1: The Half Light Quilt

Half Light baby quilt pattern by Taralee Quiltery and Ponderosa Creative, a modern minimalist striped quilt in rust, pink, yellow, and teal with circle appliqué, held up on a sandy beach under a dramatic cloudy sky.

And here we are. The winner. The baby quilt pattern I made three times in a single weekend because I couldn't stop.

The Half Light Quilt is a collaboration between Taralee Quiltery and Ponderosa Creative, and it is not currently available as a printed pattern, but you can find the PDF on their respective websites. It is so fast, so satisfying, and so visually striking that it genuinely does not feel like it should be possible to complete this baby quilt in a weekend. And yet.

I've made a custom version that I wrote about here if you want to see what's possible with a little color intentionality.

If I ever get my act together and make kits of this one, I'll link them here. And if I get my act together and list the actual baby quilts I made during the video, I'll link those too. (I'm working on it. I'm only one person with lots of projects going. Ha!)

Baby quilt gifts are one of the great joys of being a quilter, and this list exists to make sure you're never caught empty-handed. Fast, beautiful, and genuinely fun to make - the trifecta.

Watch the full video here to see them all in action, including the live speed test on the Half Light baby quilt. Come for the rankings, stay for the accidental three-quilt marathon.
