Quilt for Cool Paleontologists
The Prehistoric Quilt(s) were a way to use every print in this gorgeous fabric collection all together. The fabric is designed by Katarina Rocella for Art Gallery Fabrics and it’s called Esoterra. It has a sophisticated color palette with so many shades of green, gray and black, and that pop of fuchsia and magenta. It has some really lush florals and some fun dinosaur prints, a leopard print, fossils, and a print that looks a bit like a map used for a paleontological dig. I just couldn’t narrow down the fabrics here.
I chose the Georgie quilt pattern by Kitchen Table Quilting because it reminds me of dinosaur tracks. Same with the quilting, which is just a simple orange peel motif, but the big round shapes made me think of some big rounded footprints tracking across the quilt. This might be the first time I have ever backed a quilt with minky cuddle fabric, and I can’t believe I haven’t used it on EVERY quilt. At the very least, every quilt intended for children. It is so soft, you just can’t help but cuddle it.
I had enough fabric to make two of these quilts, so I did! They vary only slightly in fabric placement and I’m secretly hoping there is a dinosaur-obsessed set of twins out there somewhere. But don’t fret, the quilts don’t mind being separated if you’re only in need of one.
The perfect spot to take photos of these quilts in the wild would have been anywhere in the late Cretaceous, but I had to settle for the second best spot, the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista, CA, where these gorgeous sculptures of dinosaurs by Ricardo Breceda stand guard, ready to admire some quilts. These two quilts are currently available in the Handmade Shop.
