Stunning sapphire: September Quilt palette
September Quilt palette of deep + sparkling blues
September is a month generally associated with autumn, and the muted warm tones that generally represent it: orange, rust, pumpkin, gold, maybe some ochre or plum. But I’m taking inspiration this month from September’s cooler, moodier side. And hopefully manifesting fall’s cooler temps in so doing.
The sapphire, September’s birthstone, is *apparently* a symbol wisdom, loyalty, and protection (I don’t make the rules; the internet does), glowing with deep, velvety brilliance. And September’s flowers also tell a story in blue: the delicate forget-me-not, the starry aster, and the winding morning glory, each blooming in cool tones of sapphire, indigo, and periwinkle. Together, they paint a spectrum that feels crisp and contemplative, just in time for some cozy autumn pondering.
For this month’s quilt palette, I’ve gathered a range of sapphire-inspired blue fabrics, from pale sky to midnight depth. It’s a palette that feels timeless and elegant, yet fresh and dynamic enough to let modern quilt patterns shine. Below you’ll find mock-ups in a handful of patterns, each one showing a different side of September’s spectrum—whether you’re looking for calm, sparkle, or a bold statement.
Palette Picks: fabrics that fit the bill
Oooh, check me out! Straying from my usual fabric manufacturers, Art Gallery and Ruby Star Society, to explore new horizons. This month, I’m featuring the wide variety of blue selections new and upcoming from Andover Fabrics. Andover is known for their bold, saturated prints from designers like Libs Elliott, Alison Glass, and Giuseppe “Giucy Giuce” Ribaudo.
Above you’ll see a gallery of blues from Giucy Giuce’s latest collection, 40, which includes a rainbow of hues in some of his most popular prints from previous collections. You’ll also see prints from Alison Glass’s upcoming collections, Camp Kitschy Lala and Sun Print 2026. I love that perfect purple-blue-violet-periwinkle shade on her abstract scattered floral print.
Below, you’ll see the forthcoming collection from Libs Elliott, Amsterdam. Due to arrive in shops in November, this collection is a great blend of values and shades of blue to create that sapphire sparkle that we’re looking for with this month’s quilt palette! From deep navy, to bold cobalt, to light periwinkle, and even some blue-on-crisp-white prints for balance. My favorite might be the Amsterdam skyline with the windmill and the little bicycles. Heart eyes!
Perfect Quilt for a Dream Dorm Room: Cozy & Cool Meadowland
If September blues make you think of crisp notebooks, new routines, and moving into a fresh dorm room, this Meadowland quilt is the perfect companion. The sapphire palette brings together our full spectrum of blues, layered with the playful Amsterdam-inspired prints that keep it from feeling too serious. The block repetition in the Meadowland pattern, an absolute hit of a pattern from designer Meghan of Then Came June, creates a structured rhythm, while the variation in fabrics gives it that chill, scrappy vibe.
What makes it especially suited for a dorm? The balance of cool tones feels calming and focused (ideal for study nights), but the pops of lively prints add personality, making the quilt double as both comfort and statement décor. It’s the kind of piece that instantly makes a room feel pulled together, even when the rest of life is a little chaotic.
Also, this is a perfect semi-custom option for a quilt, a perfect size for a twin dorm bed, and at a lower price point than a standard custom quilt. Read more about semi-custom quilts in this post.
Perfect quilt pick for Maximalists: Sapphire Scrappy Trip Around the world
Last month’s palette post was the first time I featured an actual quilt rather than a mock-up, and I’m so pleased to do it again this month! I have been creating these birthstone/gemstone quilts from the Scrappy Trip Around the World technique for a few years now. Using so many prints from a monochromatic or analogous color palettes creates such a sparkling effect, that I have likened them to gemstones and I love exploring new ones. My dad is a geophysicist, so my fascination with gems and minerals did not come out of nowhere, but honestly, who isn’t fascinated by sparkle + color?
If Meadowland is cool and composed, Scrappy Trip is its bold, free-spirited cousin. She’s flexible, she’s wild, and her favorite color is all of them. Or in this case, her favorite shade of blue is all of them. This quilt celebrates every shade of sapphire in one joyful explosion of color and pattern.
This is the September fabric palette turned up to 11; every blue sings, and every print gets a spotlight. For maximalists, collectors, or anyone who wants their bed to be a statement piece, this quilt doesn’t whisper, it shout-sings. It can karaoke without a mic. And unlike my mock-ups, this one is real and ready, pieced, quilted, and waiting to bring its one-of-a-kind energy into a new home.
Perfect Quilt pick for city dwellers
With its clean lines and gradient blues that echo both glass skyscrapers and twilight skylines, this Ebb & Flow quilt (pattern by Penelope Handmade) feels right at home in an urban space. The graphic design gives it a modern edge, while the shift from dark to light offers balance and serenity. A carved out cozy space to rest and reflect.
It’s the kind of quilt that can pull together a small apartment or loft, adding both style and a sense of calm retreat. The sleekness of the ombre color palette is also balanced with its handmade artisanal vibe. Those prints from InkPerfect Indigo from Art Gallery Fabrics are an ode to handicrafts and textile artistry.
It’s a quilt that balances style and comfort. The perfect companion for winding down after a busy day, curling up with a book, or adding a touch of calm to a bustling city space.
Best Quilt For the Nature lover: star gazers and flower children alike
My upcoming Stargazer Lily pattern leans all the way into the Scandi-style vibe, with crisp geometry softened by floral inspiration. The curves in the petals give it a quirky movement and create that beautiful duality of "do you see flowers or do you see stars? ok, what about now?”
I mocked this one up in Libs Elliott’s Amsterdam collection, and the rich variety of blues in her prints give it both a bold punch and a serene, Scandi feel. It’s the kind of quilt that feels just as at home in a clean-lined modern apartment as it does draped over a cabin sofa under the stars.
Stargazer Lily doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it’s coming—and I can already tell it’s going to be a favorite for makers who aren’t afraid of some curves ahead.
Best Blue Quilt for the quirky whimsical set
If you’re looking for something a little unexpected, Summer Shower is it. This is one of my original quilt patterns, and I love how the scattered, offbeat shapes give it a playful, almost bubbly energy. Perfect for someone who loves the weird and the absurd, and doesn’t want a cookie-cutter quilt.
For this version, I leaned into the sapphire palette with a mix of deep indigos, airy sky blues, and gorgeous prints from Art Gallery Fabrics’ InkPerfect: Indigo collection. You can grab the Summer Shower pattern in my shop, and if you want to recreate this exact look, I’ve put together quilt kits with these very fabrics so you can stitch up your own quirky sapphire shower at home.
Sapphire September? Scandi Style September? Whatever you Call it, it’s cool cool cool
Whether you lean into the deep jewel tone richness of sapphire or the breezy lightness of sky blues, this month’s palette proves just how versatile cool tones can be. From InkPerfect Indigo to Amsterdam, the sapphire fabric collections keep things fresh while still feeling timeless. It’s the kind of palette that works in every season, but really shines when the days start to turn crisp. (any day now…)
So, sapphire September? Scandi-style September? Whatever you call it, the vibe is undeniably cool, cool, cool. If one of these quilts caught your eye, you can find the patterns (and some kits, too!) waiting in my shop, ready for you to stitch your own version of September. Or, for quilt lovers, you can find some finished works of sapphire art in the quilt shop.
